I may be the most average person you will ever meet. Average sized house. Average sized family–married with 2 kids. Average intelligence. Always was an average student. Average athlete. Just your average girl who is self conscious about her looks and body type.

I’ve been through the fad diets, crash diets, and burn out work out sessions. Feeling like I had to spend a lot of money on groceries and sports supplements to get results, not to mention spend hours at the gym. Surprise! Those were not sustainable. My greatest results came after having kids. I know, crazy right?! Wait, there’s more–I was even spending less time at the gym and was eating more good food (and saving more $$) than I ever had.

If I can do it, anyone can do it! Basic as that. I’m not anyone special. I don’t have amazing genes of  a fast metabolism or cravings for salad greens (quite the opposite, actually).  I used to eat emotionally, when I was bored, when I was celebrating, when I was hungry, and what I felt like I deserved. It was not good on the waistline, or self esteem for that matter. Once I hit that stage of change to really get a handle on my mentality toward food, I was able to get it together and far surpass my expectations of myself. The *MAGIC SECRET*–simpler than you think, but yet, harder to achieve: Eat well, and move well.

It is not in my nature to keep secrets, so I wanted to share exactly how I accomplished this and help women who may be struggling with the same things this average girl has. It all starts with a plan. My whole life, my general goals were to be “fit and tone”. I dreamed of being “body positive” but that proved to be more difficult than mind over matter. I took control by starting with workouts and focusing more on shaping my body (building muscle) over getting skinny (cardio, blech!). Then started researching how I could fuel workouts and increase results based on foods I ate. BOOM, recipe for success. Eating good food–y’all know to eat your vegetables!–and making sure my body was able to function properly (lifting weights/muscle conditioning). Feeling comfortable in my own skin came soon after when the results became visible and the plan proved to be effective. I wasn’t starving and I looked forward to hitting the weights everyday.

I’ve worked in the fitness industry for several years now, and come across a lot of different people striving for various goals. One thing that most had in common–eating healthy was the hardest part. Either because they did not know what or how much foods they should be eating or they were so overwhelmed by all the information out there, they were convinced that eating healthy came with expensive grocery bills and hours in the kitchen! Well, fortunately, along with my averageness, I am extremely frugal and hate to cook. So my game plan always included simple recipes and efficient workouts.

It’s not as hard as you think to reach your health and fitness goals. My expectations were always that I would be miserable, I would have to force myself to spend time working out, I would feel starving all the time, etc, etc.  Once I established some simple goals, started eating and working out according to those goals, the results far surpassed my expectations. My belly was always full from nutrient dense foods, workouts easily became part of my routine, were enjoyable, and results were noticeable. What I didn’t expect to come out of a healthy lifestyle: out of this world energy (from giving my body what it needed to function properly) to play with my kids, to keep up the house, to help family and friends, and an unbelievable mindset that I could conquer anything.

Seriously, it’s like my brain was free from all the messed up thoughts of self degradation and low self esteem from feeling overweight and that I had no self control with food. Freedom from that mindset allowed me to use that brain power for positivity and accomplishing things I never thought I could. Prime example: competing in figure competitions. This thought was absolutely bonkers to me–I mean, I hated being in a bikini on the beach in front of people, how could I stand on a stage and rock one? Yet, I did. I competed in one of the largest bodybuilding competitions in the world, at that. I went from self-conscious and thinking I was never going to reach my goals, to voluntarily stepping on stage in a sparkly bikini to be actually judged on my appearance!! I still can’t believe it myself, or the fact that I want to do it again. But the fact of the matter is: it came together easier than I thought. And that  means it is possible for anyone. I want to share this feeling and help other ‘average’ women overcome the faulty mindset that they will never reach their health and fitness goals. DO NOT GIVE UP! I can help you!

I use a balanced approach to dieting in calculating macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, protein) are needed to complete goals (weight loss, maintenance, weight gain).
